Alpha: The alphas are the basic leaders of the pack, they control everything and have say over anyone. It is their job to watch over everyone and make sure the pack's survival is kept. A good alpha will lay down his or her own life if he or she must for the good of his pack.

Beta:
The betas are the right hand of the alphas. They are advisors for the most part, helping the alphas make hard decision and those beneath them must listen to their command as well, though their word never goes over the alphas.

Gamma:
The gamma is the overseer of the scouts, guards and caretakers. They give orders pertaining to the duties that go along with ranks. They will tell scouts where to patrol, guards where to stand and caretakers who to care for and how to do it. They are also messengers. They will watch the pack closely and report to the beta and alpha of the going-ons in the pack.

Shamans:
Shamans are the mystics of the pack. They are the followers of the Setuku religion that many of the Blacksun members believe in. They are known for having prophetic dreams, especially concerning the seasons, cynics wonder if they are just adept weather-watchers as well as liars. The shamans hold the stories of their religion and during festival times, are the ones who prepare the rituals and ceremonies the pack participates in.

Elders:
The elders are the most experienced in life. This does not necessarily mean they are of an elder age. Though below the alphas, the elders are revered for their knowledge and wisdom. They are great story tellers and have been known to give handy advice.

Scouts:
Scouts are part of the two ranks that are the primary protectors of the pack, they scout ahead of the traveling pack and will make sure they aren't wandering toward another pack's territory or elsewhere that may be dangerous. They find safe places for the pack to stay and also recruit new members. They also keep an eye on prey to make sure that herds keep to the land to provide food for the pack. Those chosen to be scouts are usually balanced in speed and strength and are adept in fighting. This is also a diplomatic position as scouts will sometimes be sent to find allies for the pack.

Guards:
The guard are usually wolves of great strength. They are stationed near the pack's cubs and meeting places to be a second defense for the scouts. Should a wolf not of the pack get past the scouts, it is the guard they will face and the guards are usually less inclined to let a wolf escape with his life for trespassing so close to the pack's cubs. When the pack is on the move, the guards position themselves around the pack on all sides, keeping watch for attackers.

Caretakers:
Caretakers are the nannies and healers of the pack. They care for the cubs when parents are off gathering food and take care of the injured or ill. Many have an extensive knowledge of herbs.

Omega:
There is usually only one omega in the pack. This member is the weakest in strength or sometimes mind and are in no way dominate. They submit to all naturally. They eat last and speak last in the pack. It is not that they are hated or that this is a punishment, it is only nature that has brought this rank. Their duty in the pack is basically everything. Anything they are asked to do usually must be done.

Pledges:
Wolves who have no pack of their own who seek to join the pack are called Pledges. They have been reviewed by the alpha who has agreed to give them a period of assessment where the pack will get to know the pledge before a meeting is held where they are voted into membership. Pledges are usually not allowed in meetings or near cubs. They are not allowed to participate in hunts but small scraps are often left for them. It is a hard period in a wolf's life to be a pledge when they eat less than even the omega gets to.
